Merck (MRK), the American pharmaceutical company built around Keytruda, the cancer immunotherapy that accounts for the largest share of its sales, alongside the Gardasil vaccine and one of the industry's biggest animal health businesses. It earns on patented prescription drugs and vaccines. It began as the US branch of the German firm Merck and was seized by the American government during the First World War, which is why the American and German Mercks have been separate companies ever since.
